Like many Golden Slipper winners Phelan Ready has struggled to recreate his juvenile form and is yet to make a real impact as an older horse.

He has had numerous small injury setbacks that have hampered his preparations but in 2011 he really needs to show what he’s capable of.

Sunshine Coast trainer Jason McLachlan has got his gelding in a better position than ever to start winning again and his first opportunity will come during the Brisbane Winter Carnival.

Phelan Ready will make his comeback after a spell in the QTC Cup where he’ll face hot favourite Sincero.

“He trialled yesterday morning and he actually trialled very very well,” McLachlan said.

“This time in he’s had a good spell and seems to be coming back better than ever.”

The last run Phelan Ready had was in January this year when he started as a favourite in the Sunshine Coast Cup.

It was clear something wasn’t quite right though and trailed them home in eighth spot a long way away from the winner.

McLachlan decided to spell him instantly and the extra few months off appear to have done the trick.

“He’s going terrific this time in, he looks stronger over the back end,” he said.

“He seems to have got stronger and hopefully he’s shook all his problems off.”

The horse has never suffered any serious injuries in his career but it’s been more minor complaints that have just frustrated McLachlan when he knows how much potential the horse has.

“It’s been nothing major but a couple of small problems, it’s the first time I’ve had him right in a fair while,” he said.

The QTC Cup will run at Eagle Farm Racecourse on June 4th, the week before the Stradbroke Handicap.
