The Peter Moody  stable will head towards the Group 1 $500,000 Channel Seven Queensland Derby (2400m) at Eagle Farm on June 9 full of confidence after Brambles scored a tough win at Doomben today.

A copy book ride by Brad Rawiller was able to get Brambles home in a three way photo finish from Margins and Poste Restante in the Group 3 $125,000 Mittys Rough Habit Plate (2000m).

From the inside barrier Rawiller had Brambles positioned third on the fence for the majority of the race and was able to secure a run in the straight and the three year old was able to push his head out right on the line to get the decision.

Runner up Margins will be also one to follow leading into the Derby after putting up an outstanding effort for Tim Bell who had to make a long run on the Ben Currie trained three year old after jumping from a wide alley.

Margins handled the rise up in class okay after coming off two provincial wins at Toowoomba and the Gold Coast and is certain to appreciate the extra distance of the Derby.

Rawiller said that Brambles is getting better with every run and back on top of the ground today helped him after finishing third last start at Eagle Farm on a heavy track.

“I spoke to Peter this morning and he was very confident. Last time out it looked like he didn’t run it out but it was a heavy track,” Rawiller said.

“Today firmer ground, we got a lovely run and the barrier always helps you get that. He was too good at the finish.”

Rawiller has some concerns about Barmbles running out a strong 2400m because of his racing style but is hoping the three year old will continue to improve.

“He certainly has the pedigree there but with the way he races, he just carries his head a little bit high so the next 400m might sort him out but he’s getting better with every run.”

Brambles was sent out at $5 while $2.60 favourite Isopach never really threatened to finish in fourth spot, one and a half lengths behind the winner.
