Gosford trained galloper Mighty Lucky will head to the Villiers Stakes at Randwick in a fortnight after causing an upset win in the Listed $150,000 Sky Thoroughbred Central Festival Stakes (1500m) at Rosehill last Saturday.
Regular rider Nathan Thomas was able to beat the more fancy runners on the Fred Cowell trained Mighty Lucky when he brought the $21 outsider with a well-timed run to defeat the $5.50 chance It’ Somewhat by a head with Peace Force ($9.50) a close up third.
The Gai Waterhouse trained Frespanol was sent out the $3.80 favourite but never made any impression after travelling back in the field for the entire way before finishing in seventh spot.
Cowell said that will head to Randwick in two weeks time to take on a similar field in the Group 2 $250,000 Villiers Stakes (1600m).
“He’s not a Group One horse but the Villiers won’t be a lot stronger than that,” Cowell said.
“He’s a lovely horse. He’s by Casino Prince and they are all lovely horses.
Cowell has only half a dozen horses in work and Mighty Lucky is the flag bearer for his small team.
“I have about six horses in work all the time and he’s the best city horse at the moment,” Cowell said.
“But I’ve also got Bettabet Red who won the Muswellbrook Cup recently and she’s pretty good.”
Cowell said that Thomas has built up a great association with Mighty Lucky and the Central Coast based jockey will back aboard in the Villiers Sakes.
“Nathan rides him well. He’s ridden him in most of his races and gets on with him,” Cowell said.
“He moved down here from the Sunshine Coast with his wife and family and does a great job.”
Mighty Lucky’s win in the Festival Stakes was his sixth victory from thirty-five starts and took his prizemoney earnings plus bonuses to over $460,000.
The Chris Waller trained Telepathic looks likely to line up in the Villiers Stakes after winning the Listed $100,000 Tyreel Stud ATC Cup (2000m) at Rosehill last Saturday.
Waller will use his tested procedure of dropping his horses back in distance from 2000m to the 1600m of the Randwick Mile and Telepathic will follow the proven course.
“We’ve had a bit of success with bringing horses back from 2000 metres to a mile, albeit at a lesser level,” Waller said.
“She is a mare who will appreciate the big track at Randwick.
Trainer Pat Webster will be stepping last Saturday’s BenchMark 85 Handicap winner Happy Clapper up in class to the Group 2 Villiers Stakes and said the injury plagued five year old will get plenty of stable attention between now and Saturday week.
“I’ve got three daughters and he needs nursing more than them,” Webster said about Happy Clapper will face a huge weight drop in the Villiers Stakes after carrying 60.5kg to his half a length win in the $85,000 Bedford CA Handicap (1500m).
