The Gai Waterhouse trained Excess Knowledge gained the last spot in the final twenty-four horse field of the Melbourne Cup when he nosed out Zanteca to win the Group 3 $300,000 Lexus Stakes (2500m) today.

The winner of the Lexus Stakes is exempt from the ballot for the ‘Race That Stops The Nation’, but his spot also had to be fought out in the stewards room when runner up Damian Lane fired in a protest for interference from the winner over the concluding stages.

After a lengthy consideration stewards dismissed the protest and allowed Excess Knowledge to join stablemate The Offer for Waterhouse who is chasing her second win in the great race.

Waterhouse claimed her first Melbourne Cup success with Fiorente in 2013 and is already clearing a space on the mantelpiece for this year’s winning trophy.

“He is so well weighted in the Cup. Is he starting? Yep he is. And will he win? Yes he will,” an excited Waterhouse said.

Excess Knowledge was able to escape a penalty for the Melbourne Cup after his narrow Lexus Stakes win and will carry 51kg on Tuesday.

Excess Knowledge’s win in the Lexus Stakes has seen his price tighten up to $21 after being marked at $67 this morning.

Japanese stayer Fame Game heads the Melbourne Cup market order at Ladbrokes.com.au at $3.80 ahead of Caulfield Cup runner up Trip To Paris at $8 ahead of the Chris Waller trained Preferment at $10.
