Jockey Brad Rawiller was having is first ride on Mahuta and had the Flying Spur colt positioned in the first two and three in the early and middle stages before making has move on the home turn.

Rawiller then made a quick move on Mahuta ($7) who established a winning break half way down the straight and as able hold off the challenges and score a neck win over of $26 chance Patch Adams with the $3.40 favourite Bassett a nose away in third spot.

“The speed was pretty good that first part then they slowed up,” Rawiller said.

“At the 700m I yelled out to Daniel Stackhouse on Bassett to get going, cause I couldn’t wait for the ones behind us to get moving.”

“I ended up making a quick move and he is tough, he kept fighting. It’s a good team effort again.”

“I was worried at the furlong, I knew that I had made an early move but I hadn’t spent a penny in the first part. He toughed it out and he has been a different horse since he’s had the blinkers on.”

Weir put the blinkers on Mahuta before he won his maiden at Kyneton on October and then went to Caulfield to win the Listed $120,000 Polytrack Gothic Stakes (1400m) on October 17 at his last outings before coming to Flemington.

Flemington received some showers prior to the running of first race on Victoria Derby Day with the track being downgraded to a soft 5 but Rawiller said the surface was in first class order.

“It is still holding together beautifully, it is a magnificent track. It is beautiful right now.”

Senior part owner Leigh Saville said that if Mahuta pulled up in good condition, he would probably head to Sandown in two weeks time for the Group 2 $250,000 Sandown Guineas (1600m).

“We will let Darren make the decision, but certainly Sandown in a couple of weeks is something that we may look at providing the horse pulls up okay, that is probably where we would head,” Saville said.
