The 2015 Sandown Guineas nominations have been released and Mahuta is set to contest the Group 2 event that will be held at Sandown on Saturday.
Mahuta made his racing debut with a second place finish behind Runsati in the Palandri Insurances Maiden Plate (1100m) at Seymour on September 9 and he was beaten in a maiden at Echuca before he led from start to finish to record a dominant six lengths victory in the Winning Edge Presentations Maiden (1450m) at Kyneton on October 8.
The Flying Spur colt made his debut at stakes level in the Listed Gothic Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on October 17 and he led from start to finish to record an upset win before he proved that win was no fluke when he took out the Group 3 Carbine Club Stakes (1600m) at Flemington on October 31.
The Carbine Club Stakes is always the major lead-up event to the Sandown Guineas and they will be the case again in 2015 as Patch Adams, Gredington and He’s Our Rokki are both a chance to back-up in the the race along with Mahuta.
Another last start winner that has been included in the Sandown Guineas nominations is talented filly Don’t Doubt Mamma.
Don’t Doubt Mamma stamped herself as a filly to watch when she finished a fast-finishing fourth in the Listed Atlantic Jewel Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley on September 5 and she took out the MRC Foundation Plate (1400m) at Caulfield on September 19 in impressive fashion.
The Not A Single Doubt filly produced the worst performance of her racing career to date when she finished sixth in the Group 2 Edward Manifold Stakes (1600m) at Flemington on October 4, but she returned to her best with a strong win in the Listed Lexus Hybrid Plate (1400m) at Flemington on November 3.
One of the most interesting runners in the 2015 Sandown Guineas nominations is New Zealander Marky Mark, who is set to make his Australian debut after being scratched from the Carbine Club Stakes.
Marky Mark took out the Group 3 Eclipse Stakes (1200m) at Ellerslie on January 1 earlier this year and he stamped himself as one of the best juveniles in New Zealand when he took out the Group 1 Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) at Awapuni on March 28, but he has been unable to replicate that form in the Listed Northland Breeders Stakes (1200m) at Ruakaka on September 12 and the Group 2 Hawke’s Bay Guineas (1400m) at Hastings on October 3.
Other horses that have been included in the 2015 Sandown Guineas nominations are Dal Cielo, Demonstrate, Éclair Shadow, Irada, Ngarimu, Queen Of Wands, The Grey Flash and Zafiki.
