Magic Millions Lead-Up for Vo Rogue Plate Field

The Gold Coast Racecourse is host to a bumper Magic Millions Day lead-up meeting for Boxing Day on Saturday including the three-year-old Guineas types facing off in the $150,000 Group 3 Vo Rogue Plate (1300m).

A capacity field is accepted for this summer’s Vo Rogue Plate, which serves as the final tune-up for hopefuls heading towards the $2 million Magic Millions 3YO Guineas (1400m) also run at the Gold Coast on January 9.

The shortest priced of the Magic Millions-bound gallopers running in Saturday’s set weights clash is the Bjorn Baker-trained Egyptian Symbol who has work to do from a wide gate.

A winner of three of her four career starts to date the nicely-bred Stratum filly drew barrier 13, but could come into 11 if the four emergencies fail to gain a run in the BJ McLachlan Stakes Day support act.

Glyn Schofield is back aboard after Brenton Avdulla guided her to second behind Flippant in Wyong’s Magic Millions 3YO & 4YO Stakes (1200m) on December 17.

Schofield won back-to-back races on Egyptian Symbol before tat at Gosford and Kembla Grange and will be out to return her to the winners’ stall in tougher company as she steps out over further than 1200m for the first time.

Also high-up Magic Millions Guineas betting in the futures markets and running in Saturday’s Vo Rogue is the David Murphy-trained Shotacross The Bow drawn a treat in gate four.

Prepared at Eagle Farm the Rothesay gelding posted his third win from seven runs at the Sunshine Coast on December 6 and has Brad Stewart retaining the ride on Boxing Day in the race that also offers QTIS bonuses.

Other notable last-start winners in the field include the Toby Edmonds-trained Always Sacred who has won one from two at the track, fellow local Star Of Night who is in flying form for David Kelly and Sold For Song.

Wicked Style filly Star Of Night comes off back-to-back Gold Coast wins including over 1400m giving her an excellent record of two wins, three seconds and a third at the course she returns to this weekend.

She is down 100m in distance, has Daniel Griffin in the saddle again and is in red hot form, but does have gate 14 to overcome.

Sold For Song meanwhile is prepared in Toowoomba by Kevin Kemp and is only lightly-raced with three wins on her record.

The progressive daughter of Collate has won two of those however including Doomben’s Listed Gold Edition Plate (1200m) a fortnight ago.

Third and fourth placegetters in that same Brisbane lead-up, the Robert Heathcote-trained Privlaka and Tony Gollan’s Most Important also back-up in the Vo Rogue.

They have drawn at opposite ends of the big field however allocated gates 18 (into 15) and three respectively with Tegan Harrison on Gollan’s hopeful out wide and Damian Browne aboard Privlaka from the nice alley.

Murwillumbah’s Matthew Dunn has three runners in the line-up including Dram Of Red who has winning form over Sold for Song.

The Red Element gelding beat her home by three quarters of a length over 1100m at Doomben on November 28 before winning a Gold Coast trail over 1000m on December 15.

Dunn’s other two hopes are an in-form son of Fastnet Rock Perfect Dare with rails run and a top Magic Millions Guineas chance Madotti.

Falvelon filly Madotti jumps from gate two with Tye Angland in the saddle on Saturday and was last seen crossing under a length off the winner Secret Saga in the Listed Mode Plate (1200m) late last month in Brisbane.

Last summer’s Vo Rogue Plate saw $80 roughie shot Mywayorthehighway lead all the way to score the upset before a ninth to Deiheros, 10th in the Vo Rogue, in the Magic Millions Guineas.
