Luckless Savvy Dreams gets her chance in SA Fillies Classic

Kiwi trainer Grant Cullen is hoping a change of luck can see his filly Savvy Dreams find her way into the winner’s stall in the Group 3 $175,000 SA Fillies Classic (2500m) at Morphettville on Saturday.

The New Zealand Oaks placegetter finished tenth at her first Australian start in the Group 3 $120,000 Schweppervescence Stakes (Registered as Auraria Stakes) (1800m) at Morphettville on April 22.

Savvy Dreams was then sent out as a $14 chance in the Group 1 $400,000 Schweppes Oaks (registered as Australasian Oaks) (2000m) at Morphettville on May 6 but was declared a late scratching after dislodging jockey Craig Williams behind the barriers.

Cullen and Hastings co-trainer Guy Lowry then had to get Savvy Dreams passed at the barriers before running her against the colts and geldings in the Group 1 $600,000 South Australian Derby (2500m) at Morphettville last Saturday.

But luck deserted the Savabeel filly again and after jumping from the outside barrier in the fourteen horse South Australian Derby, was caught wide for most of the way and Cullen said that she did a good job to hold onto fourth place behind the Darren Weir trained Volatile Mix.

“She was three wide without cover all the way and she did a good job to box on in the straight,” Cullen told racing.com.

“That was only her second run in nine weeks so hopefully there is still a bit more improvement in her.”

Cullen is happy with the way Savvy Dreams has come through the tough run in the South Australian Derby and said she was in top condition to back up this week against the fillies over the 2500m again.

“I can’t fault her condition,” Cullen said.

“She has come through the race last Saturday very well so she’ll go around again.

“If there were any doubts at all she wouldn’t be running, but she’s 100 per cent. Paul Gatt will be on her again and hopefully our luck changes.”

Adelaide jockey Paul Gatt will be in the saddle again and Cullen is hoping for a better run in transit from barrier six in the capacity sixteen horse SA Fillies Classic field.
