Husson Eagle has been a strong and largely consistent performer for Payne since first appearing on course competitively in 2014; posting a commendable four wins and six minors through his seventeen career starts.

Having not been seen at the races since placing a credible third in the Listed Oakbank Stakes (1100m) on March 26th, Payne told Racing Ahead he is confident the conditions of the Bel Esprit Stakes will suit the four-year-old, and is pleased to have retained the services of sister Michelle to take the ride.

“He’s excellent,” Payne said.

“He’s a really nice horse to train and he always works really well.

“He lets you know when he’s going really well and has been, he’s been a bit here there and everywhere but has had good time between runs.

“I wouldn’t say he’s peaking in condition, he’s maintaining OK.

“Michelle really suits him, he loves having little weight and has got that little turn of foot, so I’m really happy she’s riding him.”

Husson Eagle immediately stamped himself as one to follow through his debut preparation during the 2014 Autumn Carnival, but undoubtedly kicked up a gear during the subsequent Spring Carnival; highlighted by an impressive third in the Listed Blue Sapphire Stakes (1200m) and fifth place finish in the talent-rich Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m).

Steadily building to the task upon resuming in November last year, the Husson gelding ran fifth in the Ballarat Magic Millions 3 & 4.y.o Classic (1100m) first-up; progressing to third in the ATC Farewells Allan Thomas BM85 (1000m) before produced a career-best performance to win the Magic Millions Sprint (1100m) on the Gold Coast on January 9th.

While failing to beat a single runner home in the Group 2 Rubiton Stakes (1100m), Husson Eagle’s most recent performance suggests he is again building towards a big performance in the Bel Esprit Stakes.

Ladbrokes Australia currently rate Husson Eagle an $8.50 chance of success in Bel Esprit Stakes betting markets.
