Hoss Amor Needs To Make History

Jockeys often say the wins are even sweeter when they earn them for good owners, especially when they can do the job in big races.

Brenton Avdulla had that feeling in the Wyong Magic Millions when he partnered Hoss Amor to victory as a bit of a roughie.

Hoss Amor is a horse that punters had an opportunity to win a share of  as part of a highly publicised promotion with Sky Racing.

Media personality Andrew Bensley is part of the ownership team that numbers somewhere up to 30 people.

As such the pressure on Avdulla is a little more, especially going into this Saturdays $2 million Magic Millions Classic on the Gold Coast.

Adding to that pressure is the fact Avdulla needs to create history if he’s to win the event.

Hoss Amor will go into the race with only that single Wyong start under her belt, no horse has claimed victory in the Magic Millions at just its second start.

“I’m not too worried about her only having the one run and no horse ever doing the double,” Avdulla said.

He points to the Epsom Handicap where no female horse had won it before they filled the first three spots in 2011.

He’s confident Hoss Amor has made the improvements she needs to be competitive against the best.

“When she worked before she had her first start she worked alright,” he said.

“She’s really improved, worked her last week and she’d improved and worked her this morning and she’s come on again.”

He admits he was a little surprise with her Wyong victory as he thought she may have needed more time.

“She doesn’t seem like one of those natural two year old runners,” he said.

That’s changed now though and Avdulla is going to the Gold Coast with only a win in mind.

“If we can just get a nice barrier and don’t get held up too much behind tiring horses we’ll run a good race,” he said.

“She’s got to improve on what she did first start, I’m sure the 1200m will be perfect for her.”

Hoss Amor came up with gate 11 at this morning’s barrier draw and should get a nice trail just worse than midfield.
