Hokko Brave needs luck from wide Melbourne Cup Barrier

Big race jockey Craig Williams concedes that he will need more than his share of good luck if he is to win the Group 1 $6m Emirates Melbourne Cup (3200m) on Japanese stayer Hokko Brave at Flemington today.

Williams says that Hokko Brave is one of the top rated stayers in Japan, but he can see barrier twenty in the twenty-four horse field as being a major obstacle.

“I do need a little bit of luck from the outside barrier drew in twenty, but I have got the right horse if he brings the right form,” Williams said.

“In Japan Hokko Brave is the rated one of the top four stayers of that they have there and the horse in front of him is of course Fame Game, he is the second highest.”

“But because we are in a handicap, the handicap weight then equates to what they are racing in.”

While Fame Game heads the Melbourne Cup market order at Ladbrokes.com.au at $5, Hokko Brave is rated as one of the outsiders of the field at $41.

Fame Game has beaten Hokko Brave at the last two times the stayers has clashed and Fame Game will be hard to beat again today.

Two starts back Fame Game went down by neck when second to Gold Ship in the Group 1 US$2.5m Tenno Sho Spring (3200m) at Kyoto, Japan on May 3 with Hokko Brave finishing in sixth spot.

Then the two lined up in the Group 1 $3m BMW Caulfield Cup (2400m) at Caulfield on October 17 with Fame Game putting in a terrific Melbourne Cup trial  with a late finishing burst that saw him run sixth to Mongolian Khan while Hokko Brave had a tough run out wide before finishing in tenth position.

Hokko Brave has had little support in the betting since the final field for the Melbourne Cup was released on Saturday and has eased from $21 to be at his current price of $41.

Fame Game has also drifted slightly in the betting from $4 to $5 but is still holding the favourite spot.
