Heavy weight jockey Steven Arnold was rewarded after a tough week of dieting when General Truce was able to win the Listed $150,000 50 Years Of Fashions On The Field Stakes (1000m) at Flemington today.

Arnold very rearly rides at the 55kg that General Truce had to carry today but was willing to get down to the weight after riding the five year old when third over 1200m at Moonee Valley last start with 59.5kg.

General Truce showed his liking for Flemington and the drop down to 1000m helped the Brief Truce gelding get back into the winner’s circle.

“A lovely little short course horse. He likes that speed on and he hits the line really hard,” Arnold said.

“A bit further he struggles a bit so it was the perfect race for him today.”

“He’s freshened him up beautiful and travelled like the winner, full credit to them.”

“He’s only a little pony and that’s his go, he has really good form at that trip.”

Winning trainer Ricky Maund was able to freshen up General Truce for the 1000m and was able to get the required result.

“Coming back off the 1200m last start was sort of no queries to come back to the 1000m. As we know he’s fairly good on his day at the 1000m,” Maund said.

“Steve was more than happy with the way he run last start. And as you see Steve doesn’t ride 55 kilos much and he was sort of adamant that he was going to waste that bit extra and ride him because the horse is in good form and saying that he did look good today.”

Luke Nolen shot favourite Golden Archer ($4) to a clear lead at the 300m and looked the winner before Arnold wound up General Truce and was able to score a comfortable three quarters of a length win in the end.

Stratcombe ($18) ran a cheeky race to wind up in third spot in front of Winter King ($5.50).
