The Flemington track was downgraded to a soft 5 at 11 o’clock this morning and the soft surface will suit Gailo Chop who is undefeated from three starts in the heavy as well as a win and a placing on soft ground.

After opening at $18 when the final field for the Group 1 $1m Longines Mackinnon Stakes (2000m) was released on Wednesday, Gailo Chop’s price has firmed into $8.

The early scratchings of top Mackinnon Stakes fancies Fawkner and Magic Hurricane also contributed to Gailo Chop’s price shortening up on the bookies’ boards.

The Antoine De Watrigant trained Gailo Chop had first class form in Europe including a second in the Group 1 Prix D’Ispanhan (1850m) at Longchamp in France on May 24 and he was also a winner two starts back in the 2000m Group 3 La Coupe De Maisons-Laffittee at Maisons- Lafffitte on September 18.

Gailo Chop, who is part owned by OTI Racing, has had one run in Australia for an eighth to Winx in the Group 1 $3m Cox Plate (2040m) at Moonee Valley last week on a good surface.

The Darren Weir trained Stratum Star heads the market order for the Mackinnon Stakes at $5 at ahead of last year’s winner Happy Trails at $6.

The John O’Shea trained Contibuter is next in the betting at $7 ahead of Chris Waller’s Flamingo Star at $7.50 while Pornichet from the Gai Waterhouse stable is listed as a $9 chance.
