Trainer Chris Waller has booked a berth for next year’s big Magic Millions day after Fundido made a winning debut in the Blackwoods Sidchrome (2yo, 1100m) at Rosehill today.

The $70,000 January main sale purchase will now be set for the Magic Millions Classic (1200m) on January 14 after a professional display downing Lyrics and Brave Soul.

Jockey Nash Rawiller settled the son of Lonhro and Red Fever outside race favourite Lyrics, an impressive looking type by Flying Spur.

Hugh Bowman aboard Lyrics set an easy pace in front after an initial rush to get there.

At the turn, Fundido moved up to the Peter Snowden-trained rival and they matched strides until the 200m where Fundido pulled away.

Brave Soul settled third on the fence for much of the race.

He had room to come through but wasn’t good enough.

Santa Monica missed the start by 10 lengths and then ran extremely wide at the home turn, giving itself no chance.

The winner, owned by the Ingham family, showed he is a talent in a recent eight length trial win.

Waller is pleased to have a horse who can run well early.

“This bloke showed in his trial he is just a natural and they are hard to come by,” Waller said.

“I can count them on one hand, the ones we have had.

“Most of them you try to make run but it just doesn’t work.

“But he is a natural who done the job and will take a lot of benefit from it.

“We will plot a path to the Magic Millions, this win should get him into the race.

“We have a bit of time up our sleeves and there is some comfort there.

“I will just find a nice race in between.”

Rawiller took notice of that trial and how Waller was happy to see Fundido work in it.

“I thought Hughie was travelling better than me so I thought I would get going and put a bit of pressure on him,” Rawiller said.

“This bloke is very strong.

“If I had got beaten it was because I went too soon.

“But at the time I felt if I could steal a bit of a march, being a green horse, it just might help us.

“In saying that, I think he is a horse worth following in the future, he is very smart.”
