Fame Game’s jockey Zac Purton has warned punters that the Japanese stayer will need plenty of luck if he is going to win the Group 1 $6m Emirates Melbourne Cup (3200m) at Flemington today.
Purton found himself under the scrutiny of the Racing Victoria Stewards for his ‘quiet’ ride on Fame Game after he threaded through the field from last on the turn to run sixth to Mongolian Khan in the Group 1 $3m BMW Caulfield Cup (2400m) at Caulfield on October 17.
But the Hong Kong based Purton explains that the Yoshitada Munakata trained Fame Game has a tendency to star gaze and pull up if he is taken to the outside for his final run home and was following instructions in the Caulfield Cup.
“They (Japanese connections) say that Fame Game is better ridden in between horses,’’ Purton told The Courier-Mail.
“They say that when he loops around the outside, he poses and pulls up and stops and doesn’t know what to do.
“These guys are a global powerhouse of world racing and they know what they want to do.
“That’s what they believe and they know the horse better than you do, and I do, and anyone does.’’
After being a dominant favourite for most of the betting for the Melbourne Cup, Fame Game has drifted slightly to $4.80 on race morning but still maintains the number one spot in the market order at Ladbrokes.com.au.
English stayer and Caulfield Cup runner up Trip To Paris has come in for some solid support to be the $7.50 second favourite ahead of the Chris Waller trained Preferment at $9.
