Punters will gain further insight into early Melbourne Cup favourite Puissance De Lune in the coming months with the import on track to make his return in the Group 2 Blamey Stakes (1600m) at Flemington on March 9.

The grey stayer turned heads and stormed to the top of 2013 Melbourne Cup markets at the end of the Spring Carnival when he was unchallenged in two dominant performances in the Listed Bendigo Cup and the Group 3 Queen Elizabeth Stakes.

An eight-length win at Bendigo had top jockey Glen Boss raving about the son of Shamardal and he declared him a genuine Melbourne Cup contender following a five-length romp in the Queen Elizabeth.

While this campaign is expected to be light in order to focus on the bigger goals at the Spring Carnival, trainer Darren Weir told RVTV he is progressing well towards his autumn targets.

“He’s coming along quite well, he did his first bit of fast work last Friday at Terang,” Weir said.

“He got through that well and he’s getting pretty close to having a jump-out.

“At this stage everything is going along how it needs to be and we’re looking at kicking him off in the Blamey.”

The hype of the Queen Elizabeth win had Puissance De Lune as short as $8 when the first Melbourne Cup markets were released last year but that has now settled and he is out to $11.

Prominent owner Lloyd Williams‘ recent purchase Sea Moon is the next best in the Melbourne Cup market at $12.

The Beat Hollow entire has placed at Group 1 level in the UK and beat Dunaden to win the Group 2 Hardwicke Stakes in June last year.
