Doveton Stakes top weight Tried And Tired on trial for Magic Millions

A start at the rich Magic Millions Carnival on the Gold Coast in January is on the cards for Tried And Tired when he lines up in the Listed $120,000 Doveton Stakes (1000m) at Sandown on Saturday.

Tried And Tired will be having his first race start since running ninth to Amovatio in the Listed $150,000 VRC-CRV Winter Championship Series Final (1600m) at Flemington on July 11 but a good first showing could see the six year old head north for the $1m Magic Millions Cup (1400m) on January 9.

The Leon and Troy Corstens trained six year old has been allocated the top weight of 60kg for his return to the race track but the Flemington trainers aren’t concerned with the impost.

“I don’t think that will worry him too much over the 1000 metres,” Leon Corstens told AAP.

“I know in the past we haven’t worried too much about all that and I’ve seen horses with similar ability to him win with a lot more weight.”

Corstens said that he would like to see Tried And Tired run a respectable race first up on Saturday and he would definitely improve with the outing.

“He’s got to show us that he’s worth taking up there as it’s a long way to go up there for nothing,” Corstens said.

Even though Corstens has been happy with Tried And Tired’s preparation, he said that the fickle Melbourne weather is to blame for the horse’s coat not coming on yet.

“I’m pleased with him but he looks, what I would call, a bit dowdy,” Corstens said.

“The weather has been a bit stupid recently, hot one day and the next day it’s about two below and you think to yourself what’s happened with this horse with his coat.”

Tried And Tired has been out of the winner’s stall for almost twelve month with his last win coming in the Listed $120,000 Jackie Loughlin Christmas Stakes (1200m) at Sandown on Boxing Day last year.

The Gold Coast Turf will host the richest race day on the Australian Racing Calendar in January when $10 million in prizemoney will be on offer throughout the day for Magic Million Sales Graduates.

The two feature races on the nine  race program are $2m in the Magic Millions 2yo Classic over 1200m for the two year olds while the three year olds will be chasing the same amount in the Magic Millions 3yo Guineas over 1400m.
