Did We Win we ‘just’ did

Some days a jockey can ride a gem and get beaten and other times get caught out and still win.

It was a case of the latter for leading Adelaide hoop Clare Lindop when she piloted Did We Win to take out today’s $30,000 Koroit Cup (1700m) at Warrnambool.

The Terry and Karina O’Sullivian-trained gelding had  the least luck but came away with the major prize.

The recent 2011 Donald Cup winner drew wide in barrier 10 and jumped midfield.

Lindop’s hope for early race speed to open up the field to enable her to get in the running line didn’t occur.

She was left three wide without cover but Did We Win travelled on the bit seemingly enjoying the experience.

At the 1000m, the farcical pace set by Jamie Mott on topweight Bocuse was broken when Kate Walters took General Mackjosh to the lead.

The 10-year-old bolter opened up a big break but even that didn’t help Lindop in her quest to get cover.

Rival jockeys just allowed General Mackjosh scoot away without regard to its chances and the rest of the field remained tight knit.

Lindop nursed Did We Win without making a move until the 600m mark.

At the 400m, General Mackjosh was a beaten horse as Bocuse and Did We Win joined in.

Tears I Cry, who settled outside Bocuse, had enough at the turn.

The well fancied Seeking Chi had settled inside Did We Win a smidge better than midfield.

She tried to follow Did We Win into the race but couldn’t sprint.

Did We Win put a half length on Bocuse who under 60kg came again near the line to go down narrowly.

Keep Control settled in the back four.

It tracked up Did We Win down the side albeit three lengths away from its backside.

It took the home turn awkwardly but finished strongly in the final 200m once balanced.

Keep Control ran on best for third and a win shouldn’t be far away given a bigger track in a similar field.

Did We Win’s victory provided Lindop and the O’Sullivans with a winning double.

They took out the first race, a Maiden, with Give Me Faith.

The Koroit Cup was the ninth victory of Did We Win in 56 starts and his first at Warrnambool.

He took his earning over the $260,000 mark.
