It isn’t the two-old-year race Gai Waterhouse would prefer to win today but she will take it.

De Shamekh, looked like a real racehorse when he put away a small field in the Australian Turf Club (1100m) at Rosehill.

But 10 hours up the road is where the top trainer’s eyes are firmly set.

Waterhouse is aiming to win her fourth $2m Magic Millions Classic (1200m) with race favourite Dreifontein at the Gold Coast.

De Shamekh got stable off to a great start when odds-on favourite.

He is a colt by Encosta de Lago and former multiple Group 1 winner Shamekha.

The $675,000 yearling may eventually look cheap with stallion prospects still live.

Last start De Shamkh put the writing on the wall when second to the well regarded Flying Snitzel on December 17 on debut.

Today, jockey Hugh Bowman settled De Shamekh in front with Party Rocker a neck away ensuring an honest speed.

Curley Mac and Sigmund (rail) had cover behind the leaders.

Bowman gradually increased the speed near the home turn and asked for full effort at the 300m mark.

At the 200m, Bowman pulled the whip.

Party Rocker struggled and the others failed to make dangerous significant ground.

The Peter Snowden-trained first starter Treaty finished late along the fence to gain second with Party Rocker third.

Waterhouse stable spokesperson David Myer described De Shamekh as a “stylish horse.”

“It is terrific to have a horse of this quality in the stable.

“Shamekha won three Group 1 races and wore her heart on her sleeve each time she went around.

“Exactly like this guy (De Shamekh) no hassles, no fuss, rolls the sleeves up and gets on with the job.”

De Shamekh is heading towards the $3.5m Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m) at Rosehill on April 7.
