Lumosty was touted as a staying prospect during the 2015 Spring Racing Carnival and she finished a credible sixth behind Caulfield Cup runner Set Square in the Group 1 Crown Oaks (2500m) at Flemington last year, but she has since been repackaged as a sprinter and she produced a string of impressive performances during her winter campaign.

The daughter of Fastnet Rock started her winter campaign with a dominant three lengths wins in the All Victorian Sprint Series (1100m) at Flemington on May 9 and the Listed The Straight Six (1200m) on May 23 before she was beaten as favourite in the Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1350m) at Doomben on June 6.

Lumosty was sent to the spelling paddock after she finished a credible third in the Group 1 Tattersall’s Tiara (1400m) at the Gold Coast on June 20 and Smerdon has saved her for a late 2015 Spring Racing Carnival campaign.

Smerdon told Racing Ahead that he expects Lumosty to perform well in the 2015 Caulfield Sprint, but he is confident that she will take plenty of benefit from the run ahead of her clash with the likes of Chautauqua, Terravista, Exosphere and Buffering in the Group 1 Darley Classic (1200m) on the final day of the 2015 Melbourne Cup Carnival.

“She has made really good progress,” Smerdon said.

“She was probably a little more forward first-up last time then what she is now, but tomorrow gives us three weeks into the Darley Classic.

“I have been really happy with her work and she will hopefully bounce off tomorrow and be at her best in three weeks.

“It doesn’t matter what you do outside of it, racing improves them.

“She is typical of a Fastnet, she is terrific in the feed bin and a solid gross sort of mare, so I think it will tighten her up.

“We are looking to go up in trip next time, but horses with her racing style that sit off the tempo seem to still be effective.”

Lumosty is currently available at 2015 Caulfield Sprint odds of $3.90 with Ladbrokes and she is on the second line of betting behind Moir Stakes runner-up Ball Of Muscle ($3.10).

The Caulfield Sprint is eligible for the Caulfield Cup Day Bonus at Ladbrokes, which means that if you back the winner you will receive 50% extra on top of your winnings!
