Dany The Fox raced consistently during his autumn campaign, picking up victories in the Catanach’s Jewellers Handicap (1400m) at Sandown and the Tab.Com.Au Trophy (1400m) at Flemington before recording his first black type victory in the Listed Kilmore Cup (1600m).

The five-year-old produced an uncharacteristically poor performance when he stepped up to Group 2 level in the Blamey Stakes (1600m) in March but trainer Mick Price is confident that the tough gelding can be a Group 1 handicap performer during the spring and has set him for the Group 1 Toorak Handicap (1600m) at Caulfield on October 12.

Price believes that Dany The Fox can have a successful spring campaign but is worried he might be slightly outpaced over 1200 meters on Saturday.

“I think he is a bit underdone,” Price told RSN on Racing Ahead.

“1200 metres where they are going to run along in front of him and probably be a bit smart may not be his go but he is lovely and fresh.

“He looks a little bit tubby but if there is pace in front of him he could poke through late and run in the money.

“He will have a good preparation that horse, he is consistent when he is right and I’m sure that he will run well.”

Price believes a mile is the ideal distance for Dany The Fox and the son of Danroad will contest the Group 2 Crystal Mile (1600m) at Moonee Valley on Cox Plate Day and the Group 1 Emirates Stakes (1600m) during the Melbourne Cup Carnival at Flemington if he performs well in the Toorak.

The veteran trainer is searching for his third victory in the Toorak Handicap, having previously won the race with Red Dazzler (2006) and Alamosa (2008).
