Bart Cummings' two-year-old Sonic Blast won at Canterbury yesterday

Bart Cummings’ two-year-old Sonic Blast displayed his true ability when he won the TJ’s Champagne Bar Plate at Canterbury Racecourse yesterday.

The juvenile showed Cummings he was a force to be reckoned with after beating none home on debut at Randwick earlier this month.

Sonic Blast won yesterday’s race by a neck ahead of Peter Snowden’s Eleuther and Anthony Cummings’ Imperial Grand.

Bart Cummings was pleased with Sonic Blast’s winning performance and was confident that a spring campaign may suit the youngster.

“I suggest that he’s got the world at his feet, he’s got all the ability and hopefully he can just put it together and perhaps there’s a nice race there for him in the spring,” Cummings said.

“We’ll take it run by run and won’t pick any big races just yet, but we won’t hold him back.”

Sonic Blast surprised all when he finished last by 30 lengths in his debut run in the Bates Bikes Handicap.

“We indicated to the owners about a month ago that he had the ability to win first up,” Cummings’ grandson and foreman James Cummings said.

“It ended up a bit embarassing when he ran off the track and was beaten 30 lengths.

“(But) he showed what he was capable of today.

“He was out in the right spot on what is looking a heavy track here.”

After failing at his first start, Sonic Blast was order back to trial where he was ridden by jockey Tim Clark.

Clark was encouraged by what he saw in that race.

“There’s plenty of upside there, he’ll get over further and he’s in the right hands with Bart,” Clark said.

“It wouldn’t surprise me to see him win a pretty good race.

“I trialled him after his first-up run and he trialled well so I was confident he would run well today.”

Sonic Blast wasn’t the only two-year-old who flourished at Canterbury yesterday, with Chris Waller’s Mickelberg and Peter Snowden’s Bello both saluting.
