Trainer Peter Snowden is willing to give Complacent his chance at Group 1 glory after the three year old scored a narrow win in the Group 3 $200,000 PJ’s Irish Pub Parramatta Gloaming Stakes (1800m) at Rosehill today.
Complacent was taking a huge step up in grade today after winning a 1400m Maiden at Hawkesbury and Snowden is confident he can do the same again when he lines up in the Group 1 $400,000 Spring Champion Stakes (2000m) at Randwick in two weeks time.
Snowden has always thought that Complacent would step up to the mark but was prepared to wait for the three year old to mature.
“He’s a quality horse and we thought this about a month ago, six weeks ago, after he had his second start at Warwick Farm we thought he might be a potential Carnival horse and it was little bit too early so we gave him a bit of a freshen up,” Snowden said.
“The plan was to go to Hawkesbury to try to get that maiden win and just throw him in and see how he went.”
“He’s a young immature horse but definitely got talent.”
Snowden is also looking forward to the Autumn and thinks he will develop into a quality 2000m horse.
“He’s quality stayer and stayers can do that. Come Autumn I think he will furnish into the horse that I know he will be and I hope there will be a good result there for us as well.”
Winning jockey Kerrin McEvoy was able to give Complacent a soft run just behind the pace and when the leader Order Of The Sun rolled off the rails at the top of the straight McEvoy pushed him up along the fence.
Solidly back favourite Savvy Nature ($3) and Drago ($3.70) made their runs together out in the middle of the track with Savvy Nature and Complacent ($9) drawing away to fight out the finish.
McEvoy was able to get enough out of Complacent to score a head win over Savvy Nature with Drago trying hard two and three quarter lengths away in third spot.
All three placegetters are likely to meet again in the Spring Champion Stakes for a rematch with the Group 1 $1.5m AAMI Victoria Derby (2500m) at Flemington on November 2 also a possibility.
