Four-year-old mare Break Card will have a final chance to win a Black Type race before becoming a broodmare in this Saturday’s $100,000 Listed Civic Stakes at Rosehill Gardens Racecourse.

Trainer Gerald Ryan is hopeful that the multiple city winning mare will be able to add a stakes win on her record.

Ryan retired Break Card to stud in October last year after she failed to perform in the $100,000 Listed Angst Stakes.

Break Card was served by Onemorenomore, however, the pregnancy did not take.

“She tested positive at 28 days but then another test showed she was no longer pregnant and must have absorbed the foal,” Ryan said.

Break Card’s attempt at this weekend’s Civic Stakes may well be her last chance to add value to her future foals, with the Danzero mare set to go back to stud in the spring.

“Her owner John Baxter sent her back into training so we could give her one more chance at a stakes race before she becomes a mother,” Ryan said.

“She has won five races and I would love to see her do it again in the Civic Stakes.”

Ryan will also saddle up youngster Extraceed at Rosehill on Saturday, who is out to win his second race from just four starts.

Extraceed showed his inexperience in his first two races but relied on his raw ability to win the Kingaroy Kitchen 2YO Handicap last start by a nose.

“He’s trained on well and it would be good to see him win again,” Ryan said.

“Ridden quieter last time really helped him.”

This may be the last run for Extraceed before he heads out to the paddock for a long spell that will see him come back for the summer races.

“We’ll see what happens after Saturday but four runs may be enough for his first preparation,” Ryan said.

“He will probably miss the spring in Sydney.

“He might come back in the summer with a view to the autumn and winter next year.

“He has done enough as a two-year-old and I think he can go on with it next season.”
