Chris Waller has ten in 2016 Doomben Cup nominations

Champion Sydney trainer Chris Waller has provided a quarter of the forty nominations for the 2016 Group 1 $650,000 Hardy Brothers Doomben Cup (2000m) to be run at Doomben on May 21.

Group 1 winners Opinion and Moriarty are among Waller’s ten Doomben Cup nominations that also include Indexed Linked, Junoob, Kool Kompany, Lady Le Fay, Strawberry Boy, Tales Of Grimm, Weary and French import Spiritjim.

Trainer John O’Shea has nominated five Godolphin horses with the well performed Hauraki and It’s Somewhat as well as Ambience, Havana Cooler and the three year old Old North.

Victoria’s leading trainer Darren Weir has also nominated five horses for the weight for age 2000m Winter Carnival Group 1 – Master Of Arts, Master Zephyr, Puccini, Raw Impulse and Real Love.

Gai Waterhouse won the 2015 version with French import Pornichet and the ‘Lady Trainer’ has only one entry in Excess Knowledge to try to win back to back Doomben Cups.

Excess Knowledge had one run during the Sydney Autumn Carnival for a second to It’s Somewhat in the Group 2 $175,000 Ajax Stakes (1500m) at Rosehill on March 12.

Trainer Robert Hickmott has nominated the Lloyd Williams owned French import Gallante who proved his staying class with an all the way win in the Group 1 $2m Schweppes Sydney Cup (3200m) at Randwick on the second day of ‘The Championships’ April 9.

The Murray Baker trained Sakhee’s Soldier and Volkstok’N’Barrell from the stable of Donna Logan and Chris Gibbs will be representing New Zealand in the Doomben Cup.

The final field for the Doomben Cup will be released on May 18, 2016.
