Last Saturday’s Doomben winner Chillin With Dylan is still a chance to gain a start in the Listed $100,000 Christmas Cup (2400m) at Randwick on December 12.
The Ben Aherns trained Chillin With Dylan was back in the winner’s stall with a convincing win the $65,000 BenchMark 75 Handicap over 2200m and the 2400m of the Sydney Summer Carnival staying feature looks ideal at this stage of his campaign.
But Aherns is not that confident that the Dylan Thomas four year old will be rated highly enough to gain a place in the field.
“We had a bit of luck today when the field broke up when Grappa Bandy looked to break down but I won’t make a decision until I see how he pulls up,” Ahrens said.
“He’ll need his rating to go up and it’ll need to shoot up quite a bit to warrant going to Sydney.”
Winning jockey Ryan Wiggins had Chillin With Dylan on the fence midfield in the run to the turn out of the straight the first time but when the field started to chop and change around the back of the track, he was pushed back to last at the 1000m mark.
Wiggins was then able to miss most of the trouble when the leader Grappa Brandy broke down and had to be restrained, causing disruption to the field as Robbie Fradd tried to ease him down.
Chillin With Dylan was then able to weave his way through the field and Wiggins had him in the clear at the 300m and the promising stayer was able to race away to score a convincing two and a quarter lengths win over Rock The Pac with Annaman a close up third.
As a three year old Chillin With Dylan showed his staying potential during the Winter Carnival with a third in the Group 3 $125,000 Surfers Paradise RSL Gunsynd Classic (1600m) at the Gold Coast followed by a fourth in the Group 3 $125,000 Mitty’s Rough Habit Plate (2000m) at Doomben.
At his next race start Chillin With Dylan ran a mighty race to finish fourth in the Group 3 $150,000 Mullins Lawyers Grand Prix Stakes (2020m) at Doomben before finishing three and half lengths behind the Magicool when tenth in the Group 1 $600,000 Channel 7 Queensland Derby (2200m) at Doomben.
Chillin With Dylan has also shown his versatility this campaign with wins over shorter distances early in his preparation in a 1350m Class 3 at Ipswich on October 21 followed by a win over 1650m in a NMW Handicap at Doomben on November 7.
Last Saturday’s win took the four year old’s winning tally to four from twenty starts and boosted his earnings to just over $177,000.
