The two-year-old was far too strong for his opposition and drew away from the field in the final stages of the race to record a two and a half-length victory from Sportegic  and Salute To Jude.

Trainer Peter Moody said he has been thrilled with the horse both times he has appeared at the races and believes he will be even better when he gets a chance over more distance.

“He’s run enormous both times and hasn’t travelled in either run,” Moody told the media after the race.

“He’s a bit deceiving at home because he’s so laid back and if anything he’s too relaxed but he comes to the races and puts his game face on.

“Wait until he gets out over 1400 metres or a mile.”

Moody said last week that a 2013 Spring Racing Carnival campaign for Monkstone would depend on how he performed on Saturday and it appears that the Fastnet Rock colt has well and truly past the test.

The leading trainer said that Monkstone will have a short break, working only on the water walker, before returning to the races for the Group 3 Caulfield Guineas Prelude (1400m) on September 29 before the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas on October 12.

”When you’ve got a million-dollar colt owned by a major breeding operation in Coolmore you aim at the main races and that’s what his ability dictates we’ll be doing,” Moody said.

Moody has previously tasted success in the Caulfield Guineas, winning the $1 million race with Anacheeva in 2010.
