Ratings expert Daniel O’Sullivan has Mongolian Khan on top of his 2015 Caulfield Cup tips, but he believes that Snow Sky is the pick of the international runners in the Group 1 event and represents outstanding value at his current odds.
Snow Sky is yet to record a win at the highest level of racing, but he finished third behind Kingston Hill and Romsdal in the Group 1 Ladbrokes St Leger Stakes (2937m) at Doncaster on September 13 and he took out both the Group 2 Yorkshire Cup (2816m) at York on May 15 and the Group 2 Hardwicke Stakes (2414m) at Royal Ascot on June 20 earlier this year.
O’Sullivan told RSN that he could not believe that Snow Sky went up at such lengthy 2015 Caulfield Cup odds earlier in the week and he is confident that the Nayef entire will prove very tough to beat if he can replicate his Hardwicke Stakes performance.
“I can’t believe that he was longer in the market than the two Japanese horses,” O’Sullivan said.
“He comes into this race with the profile of a 2400 metre horse which I really like because when you look back at the overseas runners that have done best in this race, they have all presented more as 2400 metre horses than the 3200 metres or plus of some of the horses that come here.
“His ratings going back through his form really stack up strongly and he has some serious form around horses like Brown Panther, Eagle Top and Postponed, who are genuine Group 1 stayers over there in the UK.
“His peak rating, which could certainly win this race comfortably, was when he was able to control the race at a moderate pace and kick away to win by nearly four lengths on that occasion in a really strong race.
“He presents here as clearly the best of the internationals and double figure odds for him is really a luxury price.
“I have more around the $6.50 mark.
“He is going to race somewhere up there on the pace, he has Damien Oliver riding who has won four Caulfield Cups and there really isn’t much to fault about his credentials here.”
Snow Sky is currently available at 2015 Caulfield Cup odds of $9.50 with Ladbrokes and he is on the second line of betting along with Godolphin-owned Hauraki ($9.50), while Australian Derby winner Mongolian Khan ($4.80) remains a clear favourite.
