Byrne pleaded guilty at yesterday’s inquiry when Racing Queensland Stewards charged him with presenting himself to ride at the official Doomben trials on February 14 with a banned drug in his system.

The analyst’s report from a sample taken from Byrne was found to contain the banned substance didesmethylsibutramine, which is a metabolite of the anorectic, sibutramine.

Sibutramine is used in weight loss supplements but many products with this drug have been withdrawn from the market in many countries including Australia.

Byrne was suspended from riding for four weeks, commencing from the date he was originally stood down, March 16 and can resume riding on April 13 in time for the start of the Brisbane Winter Carnival.

Byrne is currently sitting third on the jockey’s table with forty-four wins, one win below second positioned Tim Bell. Both riders are way off the pace set by premiership leader Chris Mince who has racked up seventy-one wins so far this season.
