A breakthrough win for Brazen Moss at Canterbury on Wednesday will be a stepping stone for the Gerald Ryan trained three year old on his way to the $1m Magic Millions 3yo Guineas (1400m) at the Gold Coast on January 10.

Brazen Moss has recorded five seconds from six race starts and Ryan is hoping a gelding operation after his last start second in a 1500m two year old Plate at Rosehill in June will do the trick to help him record his first win.

“Brazen Moss has been gelded and I’m hoping that will help him,” Ryan told AAP.

Because of Brazen Moss’ persistent run of second placings, Ryan feared that the Mossman three year old would receive too much weight in a maiden handicap but he was lucky enough to find a three year old maiden at set weights.

“He has run five seconds in town so he gets too much weight against his own age,” Ryan said.

Brazen Moss is closely related to four times Group 1 winner Buffering and Ryan is hoping the gelding operation will get the same results that it got with the outstanding Queensland sprinter.

“He’s a three-quarter brother to Buffering and I’m told he was a handful as a young horse and needed gelding,” Ryan said.

“Hopefully it has the same effect on Brazen Moss.”

Buffering is still racing in top form and is currently in Hong Kong chasing another Group 1 win in the HK$18.5m Longines Hong Kong Sprint (1200m) at Sha Tin on December 14.

The Robert Heathcote trained Buffering was widely regarded as a Group 1 bridesmaid because of the numerous seconds he recorded at Group 1 level.

But that all changed during the 2013 Spring Carnival when the son of Mossman strung together a hat trick off Group 1 wins taking out the $1m Sportingbet Manikato Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley, the $1m VRC Sprint Classic (1200m) at Flemington and the $500,000 Crown Perth – Winterbottom Stakes (1200m) at Ascot in Perth.

The $450,000 City Jeep Moir Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley during the 2014 Melbourne Spring Carnival was then added to his Group 1 trophy cabinet.

A good performance by Brazen Moss in the $40,000 Schweppes Plate for the three year olds over 1200m at Canterbury on Wednesday will see him head to Wyong for the $100,000 Magic Millions Wyong 3yo Stakes (1200m) on December 18 as a lead up for the Magic Millions 3yo Guineas at the Gold Coast.

Tye Angland has the ride on Brazen Moss at Canterbury and will need some early luck jumping from the outside gate in the eight horse field.

While the numbers are small, the opposition looks fairly smart with Chris Waller saddling up three runners, first start Sadler’s Lake, Liberty Island resuming from a spell and last start beaten favourite Avonaco.

While Gai Waterhouse will produce the well-bred Flying Spur colt Skylimit who will be sporting blinkers on debut following two impressive Randwick barrier trials wins, one by four lengths and the other by seven lengths.
