Black Caviar is chasing a record 10th straight career start win

Black Caviar will attempt to extend her unbeaten streak to ten wins this Saturday when she contests the $1 million Newmarket Handicap on March 12, 2011.

The superstar mare has already equalled the Australian record of nine straight wins, and will be looking for her tenth when she begins as top weight in this weekend’s race.

Black Caviar took on the talented Group 1 Lightning Stakes field last start and stormed home for an easy 3.5 length win.

The Peter Moody-trained mare will run in this weekend’s Newmarket Handicap, despite being allocated a hefty 58 kilograms in weights.

“We could take the safe option and wait for the William Reid Stakes in a couple of weeks where she would be $1.10 and probably win by half a lap,” Peter Moody said.

“But I’m keen to run her, the owners are keen, and this is a $1 million race.”

Meanwhile her competition, including Star Witness’ trainer Danny O’Brien, are hoping that the young mare will be weighted out of the contest.

“I’m certainly not going to the races thinking we are going to beat her, but we’ll be turning up and giving ourselves a chance,” said O’Brien.

Black Caviar will only be withdrawn from the Newmarket Handicap should the track drop below a Dead rating.

“I wouldn’t risk her with 58kg under those circumstances,” said Moody.

Otherwise, the super mare will have the whole of Australia on the edge of their seats as they watch possible history in the making.

“Look, this will be a test for her but she is a racehorse and you can’t wrap them up in cotton wool forever,” Peter Moody said.

“She is in good shape, I can’t fault her.”
