English stayer Big Orange is unwanted in the betting in the Group 1 $6m Emirates Melbourne Cup (3200m) at Flemington on Tuesday.
The proven two miler was marked $41 when the final Melbourne Cup field was released on Saturday after he drew barrier twenty-three and he has been friendless ever since.
The Michael Bell trained Big Orange has drifted out to $61 with Ladbrokes.com.au but the Newmarket trainer considers him to be well over the odds.
“I think he’d have probably been a $17 to $21 shot if he’d have gone into the race on the back of the Goodwood Cup,” Bell told racing.com.
“His form in the Princess Of Wales prior to that in the July meeting at Newmarket is very solid and puts him as a high-class gelding over a mile-and-half (2400m).
“The reason that I think he has gone under the radar is because of his run at York but the fact that he finished (seventh) meant that he didn’t run his race. If he’d finished second or third you could argue that was as good as he is but he just ran no race at all so if you forgive him that he’s won four Stakes races and is fully entitled to line up here.”
Big Orange could only beat one runner home at his latest start when seventh of eight behind Melbourne Cup rival Max Dynamite in the Group 2 £160,000 Weatherby’s Hamilton Insurance Lonsdale Cup (2 mile, 88 yards) at York, in England, on August 21.
Melbourne Cup second favourite Trip To Paris ($8.50) also went around in the Lonsdale Cup to finished fifth before running a slashing second to Mongolian Khan in the Group 1 $3m BMW Caulfield Cup (2400m) at Caulfield on October 17.
Big Orange’s English Summer form was first class prior to the Londsdale Cup with back to back Group 2 wins at Newmarket and Goodwood.
The Duke Of Marmalade gelding was able to score a half length win in the Group 2 £100,000 Princess Of Wales’s Arqana Racing Club Stakes (2414m) at Newmarket on July 9 and then went on to win the Group 2 £300,000 QATAR Goodwood Cup (2 miles) at Goodwood on July 30, beating Quest For More and Trip To Paris.
