Darley assistant trainer Darren Beadman is confident that La Pieta will perform strongly when she has the second start of her winter campaign in the 2014 Glenlogan Park Stakes at Doomben this weekend.
La Pieta started her 2014 Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival preparation with an impressive second behind the in-form Srikandi in the Listed Silk Stocking (1200m) at the Gold Coast on May 3 and Beadman told Blinkers Off that the Redoute’s Choice mare had trainer on strongly ahead of the Glenlogan Park Stakes tomorrow.
“La Pieta ran in the Silk Stocking down at the Gold Coast and was first-up from a spell and ran extremely well,” Beadman said.
“She just had a little bit of a break between runs and she has settled in well here and will step out on Saturday.”
La Pieta worked alongside stablemate Mohave in Brisbane earlier in the week and the talented colt is set to contest the Group 2 BRC Sires Produce Stakes (1350m) this weekend.
Mohave stamped himself as a colt to watch with a win in the Listed Blue Diamond Preview (1000m) at Caulfield on January 25 and performed fairly in the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) at the same venue on February 22, but was not overly impressive when fifth behind Brazen Beau in the Group 2 Champagne Classic (1200m) at Doomben on May 10.
The son of Exceed And Excel will be joined in the BRC Sires Produce Stakes field by stablemate Careless and Darley also has Knoydart in the Group 1 Doomben 10,000 (1350m) Cameo and Wistful in the Group 3 Lord Mayor’s Cup (1615m) as well as Auberge in the Group 3 Grand Prix Stakes (2200m), but Beadman believes that La Pieta may be the operations best chance of scoring a feature race win in Brisbane this weekend.
“He (Mohave) has done extremely well as well; he has probably done a little bit too well up here,” Beadman said.
“He had a nice hit out this morning and a good blow out for Saturday and they looked to have come through their gallops nicely.
“We have Careless up here as well in the Sires with Mohave and Mohave is probably a fraction more forward, but I think that La Pieta will run a race.”
La Pieta is currently available at 2014 Glenlogan Park Stakes odds of $11, while Mohave ($31) is at lengthy odds to return to winning form in the BRC Sires Produce Stakes.
