Trainer Peter Moody is giving his three year old Bassett a great chance of causing an upset win in Saturday’s Group 1 $1m BECK Caulfield Guineas (1600m) at Caulfield.
Moody trained the winner of the 2010 Caulfield Guineas with Anacheeva and has a high opinion of the lightly raced Bassett.
Bassett has only been to the races on three occasions for two wins and a fifth to Press Statement in the Group 1 $600,000 BMW Australia J.J. Atkins (1600m) at Doomben during this year’s Brisbane Winter Carnival during his two year old season.
The Chris Waller trained Press Statement is the one to beat again and has been installed as the $2.60 favourite with Ladbrokes.com.au while Bassett is listed as a $13 chance.
If you fancy a wager on Bassett, you can get over the odds if you log onto Ladbrokes.com.au and take up the special Caulfield Guineas Race Day offer of Best Tote or SP + 20% that is available on all ten RACES at Caulfield on Saturday up to a maximum bet of $50.
Moody has high hopes for Bassett and said with a bit of luck the Savabeel gelding will be right in the finish.
“I think Press Statement is at the top of the tree but then I think there is Bassett and then below him a group of others,” Moody said.
Moody is stepping Bassett straight up from his win in an $80,000 three year old Plate at Caulfield over 1100m to 1600m at Group 1 level but said he adopted the same tactics in Queensland and the plan almost came off.
“I know it is a massive ask for Bassett to step up from 1100m straight to 1600m but he did it without luck in Queensland in the winter in the Group 1 Aitkins Stakes,” Moody said.
Daniel Stackhouse has been aboard Bassett for his two wins which include his debut win in a 1100m Caulfield two year plate on May 16 in his two year old season and his win at his first run in the new season over 1100m in a three year old Plate at Caulfield on September 19.
Stackhouse will have the reins again in the Caulfield Guineas and will be looking to slot into a trailing position in the early stages from barrier nine in the sixteen horse field.
If you like to bet early in the day you can get 50% extra on your first fixed odds winner in races 1 – 5 on the ten race program at Caulfield for a maximum bet of $50.
