Classy sprinter Ball Of Muscle has returned to the winner’s circle in style at Doomben Racecourse this afternoon; leading from start to finish to take out the Group 2 QTC Cup (1200m) by half a length.
Jumping from the gates well from the rails draw, jockey Glyn Schofield allowed the son of Dubawi to immediately press forward and take up the running of the QTC Cup; setting a quick tempo ahead of El Roca and punters’ pick That’s A Good Idea.
Allowing That’s A Good Idea to stride up alongside on the corner, Ball Of Muscle was offered a clear racing line and pulled a length clear upon reaching the final straight, maintaining a strong enough sprint to find the line ahead of That’s A Good Idea and talented three-year-old stable mate Kuro.
Schofield delivered a gem of a ride aboard the full brother of Group 1 winner Tiger Tees in the 2015 QTC Cup but revealed the horse did need a little help along when challenged in the final straight.
“What a lovely horse he is,” Schofield said.
“He looks the part and he’s starting to live up to the hype of his family and he’s not the little brother anymore.
“I had an open mind and I wasn’t sure what That’s A Good Idea was going to do from the wider gate but he just sprang the lid so cleanly and was effortless in the lead.
“He had his ears up the whole way; he put them back at sort of the furlong when he got challenged and I never felt in any danger.
“It wasn’t that far but it was a comfortable win; he seems to do things on autopilot and he’s best with lots of speed.
“He was sort of toying with himself down the straight, he wasn’t really concentrating and I just asked him to work out what he was supposed to do inside the last furlong and he stuck to it and won well.”
In winning the 2015 QTC Cup, Ball Of Muscle has extended his impressive race record to eight victories and a further five minor places through only 13 career starts.
