The Redoute’s Choice colt was competing at Group level for the first time and proved that he belongs at that level with an impressive on-pace performance that has connections thinking about a trip to Melbourne for the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m).

Aussies Love Sport had been a frustrating horse for both punters and connections at the start of his three-year-old campaign but Gai Waterhouse stable foreman Mark Newnham said he is delighted that the colt has put it all together

“He is a lovely colt, he has just taken a little while to work it out but his racing mannerisms today were terrific,” Newnham said in a post-race interview.

“He put him in the right spot and you know when Jimmy (jockey Jim Cassidy) starts to look around at the top of the rise you know that he is going alright.

“You wouldn’t get a better looking animal than him and now he is starting to run up to his looks.”

Waterhouse has generally touted Aussies Love Sport as a Caulfield Guineas contender but according to Newnham the Group 1 Golden Rose (1400m) could also be on the agenda.

“He is still in the Golden Rose but Gai will decide where he goes from today,” Newnham said.

“It would be hard to say no too but the boss is better at making these decisions than me.”

Darren Smith-trained Open Book progressed from a Sunday Class 2 Handicap at Gosford to finish second in a fabulous run while Champagne Cath produced a much better effort than her poor performance in the Dooleys Handicap (1400m) at Rosehill Gardens on August 17.
