A return to the races is not yet imminent for Atlantic Jewel but she impressed onlookers when working over 1000m with Super Cool this morning and appeared in excellent order, showing flashes of her trademark athleticism.

Atlantic Jewel has not been seen at the races since her victory in the 2012 All Aged Stakes (1200m) at Randwick last year.

The Mark Kavanagh-trained mare was considered one of the leading chances for the 2012 Cox Plate (2040m) but an injured tendon in her nearside foreleg saw her ruled out of the entire Spring Racing Carnival.

Kavanagh had previously stated that the racing career of the daughter of Fastnet Rock could be over and bypassed the Sydney Autumn before announcing in May that Atlantic Jewel would begin a slow build towards the Spring Racing Carnival.

The four-year-old was given a brief preparation, without going to the races, which involved slow laps of the sand track at Flemington each morning as well as a few minor stretch outs and after a brief break has now returned for more strenuous trackwork.

Kavanagh is still taking a day by day approach with the super mare and is reportedly considering giving her a jump out over the coming weeks.

Although he leading Victorian trainer is yet to announce his Spring Carnival plans for Atlantic Jewel the $3 million Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) is expected to be the target for the equine superstar.

Atlantic Jewel has been restricted to only seven career starts but has left an undeniable imprint on the Australian racing scene with her dominant victories in the 2011 Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m) and Group 2 Wakeful Stakes (2000m) leading to comparisons to the great Black Caviar.
