Americain has improved since track work at Moonee Valley last week

Handler Stephanie Nigge believes last year’s Melbourne Cup winner Americainhas put his unfavourable form behind him since arriving in Australia from his French stables.

The horse has continued to flourish since performing track work at Moonee Valley last week.

“He is coming back and he’ll have a good chance,” Nigge insisted.

Americain finished a disappointing tenth in his last start in France, however, Nigge is confident the Dynaformer entire will be back to his best come Cup day.

“We know his form is not the same as last year,” she said.

“But he’s improved a lot since he went to Moonee Valley last week.”

The six-year-old currently weighs in at 525 kilograms, a weight that is five kilograms more than he was for last year’s Melbourne Cup win.

“He is five kilos more than in the Cup,” Nigge said.

“He will be the same weight on Cup day.

“He is nearly fit.”

Americain will have his final lead-up run to the $6.2 million Melbourne Cup this Saturday, when he runs in the Moonee Valley Cup in Melbourne.

“I think he’s nearly the same and he’ll show us Saturday how he is,” Nigge said.

“After Saturday we will know a lot of things.”
