Mike Moroney’s promising sprinter African Pulse won’t run at Caulfield on Saturday because of a leg injury and is out indefinitely.
African Pulse has the second favourite behind Peter Moody’s Golden Archer in the Listed $120,000 The Shark.com.au Stakes (1100m) but Moroney had to scratch the four year old after sustaining a cut to one of his legs at trackwork this morning.
“He has cut his pastern and he’s had a few stitches,” Moroney’s racing manager Anthony Feroce said.
“It’s going to put him back a little bit but how will depend on how he recovers from it and it depends on what happens over the next few days.”
“The main thing is to prevent infection. We have given him antibiotics so we’ll see how he comes up in the next few days.”
It’s a wait and see situation for African Pulse who looked to have a bright Spring ahead after scoring impressively first up in the John Colwell & Balwant Singh Handicap (1000m) at Flemington on August 11.
With African Pulse out, Golden Archer has firmed even more into $2.80 and will start a short priced favourite on Saturday.
Golden Archer scored first up in the $70.000 Monjon Australia Handicap (1000m) at Flemington on July 21 after almost ten months away from the racetrack because of a hoof injury.
The Rock Of Gibraltar entire was then sent out as favourite but was run down by Shanghai Warrior when second in the Group 3 $150,000 Aurie’s Star Handicap (1200m) on August 11 down the Flemington straight.
Jason Warren’s Freereturn is now the second favourite at $5 after scoring back to back wins, the latest leading all of the way in the Listed $120,000 70th Anniversary Of The Kokoda Campaign Regal Roller Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield on August 18.
