A patient ride by Hugh Bowman saw two year old Boban flash down the middle of the track to take out the Listed $100,000 Sita Australia The Phoenix (1350m) at Doomben today.

Bowman was able to get Boban to settle today and travel well at the rear of the field and once he was able to shift to the outside, the colt overpowered the leaders to score a comfortable win from the favourite Hoss Amor.

Hoss Amor also settle well in behind the leaders and even though James McDonald had to look hard for an opening, Boban was clearly too strong in the run to the line.

Boban’s win continued the success of Anthony Freedman over the Brisbane Winter Carnival after taking out last week’s Group 1 Doomben Cup with Mawingo.

“Anthony assured me he has ability but he just has a few issues as far as temperament goes,” Bowman said.

“He said the he would like to see him settle back and see how everything goes. At the 350m it was the case of getting room. I was chopping all over their heels and when I got him out and balanced him up, he reeled them in a matter of strides.”

“He got a bit lost in front and wanted to wander. He’s certainly one to follow.”

Bowman said that Boban will have no trouble handling the step up to 1600m and would be better suited once he went to the bigger track at Eagle Farm.

Freedman will now look at the Group 1 $500,000 Patinack Farm T J Smith (1600m) at Eagle Farm on June 9 and on today’s win Boban will be right in the mix.

Runner up Hoss Amor wasn’t disgraced but just struggled at the end of the 1350m after having a nice run while Saturn Rock was always well back in the field and never threatened.
