Global Glamour and Into Orbit did battle for the lead in the early stages of the Arrowfield Sprint, while jockey Mark Zahra was able to settle Derryn into a nice rhythm in the middle of the field.

Global Glamour fought off Into Orbit at the top of the straight, but she was unable to hold-out Derryn in the final 100 metres of the Arrowfield Sprint.

Co-trainer David Hayes made the decision to back Derryn up following his credible performance behind Chautauqua in the Group 1 T.J. Smith Stakes (1200m) at Royal Randwick last weekend and he was delighted that his decision had paid dividends.

“It was a really great win,” Hayes said.

“He revelled in the conditions.

“They back-up so well off soft ground and he is a horse that likes the jar out of the ground.

“You have to take advantage of it when you get it.

“He is one of the few that we have here that really loves the ground.

“I think a Newmarket might be the right type of race for him.

“He has never been far away from a Group 1 of his own age and maybe the Newmarket next year is the one for him.”

Derryn has now recorded three wins from his 11 race starts and all of his best form has come in Sydney.

He started his Autumn Racing campaign with a couple of credible performances in the Group 3 Manfred Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield on February 4 and the Group 3 Zeditave Stakes (1200m) at the same venue on February 25 before he returned to Sydney to score an impressive win in the Listed Darby Munro Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill Gardens on March 18.

Global Glamour confirmed her status as an iron-horse with another brave effort in second, while Impending dashed home for third after getting too far back in the run.
