Winx stamped herself as the new superstar of Australian racing with a dominant victory in the 2015 Cox Plate at Moonee Valley this afternoon.
Jockey Hugh Bowman settled Winx in the first half of the field in the early stages of the Cox Plate and it was clear that he had a great deal of horse under him at the top of the straight.
The Street Cry mare quickly put her rivals to the sword and she raced away from her rivals in the straight to win the Cox Plate in track record time from a gallant Criterion and Highland Reel.
The 2015 Cox Plate results will be known in less than six and a half hours, but at this stage you can still make a case for just about every horse that is set to contest the Group 1 event at Moonee Valley this afternoon.
Highland Reel has been on top of Cox Plate betting since the final field was released on Tuesday morning and he remains the punters elect at a quote of $5.50, but he has been joined as equal favourite by star mare Winx.
Winx showed a great deal of ability as a three-year-old, but she has continued to improve this preparation and can record her third straight win in the Cox Plate following her breath taking victories in the Group 2 Theo Marks Stakes (1300m) and the Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m).
Another horse that will take winning form into the 2015 Cox Plate is Lindsay Park-trained Criterion, who is currently available at $6 to record a fifth victory at the highest level of racing.
Criterion stamped himself as the best weight-for-age galloper in Australia when he took out the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) at Royal Randwick on April 11 and after three credible efforts in Hong Kong and the United Kingdom he returned to Australian racing with an outstanding performance in the Group 1 Ladbrokes Caulfield Stakes (2000m) at Caulfield on October 10.
Highland Reel is the international horses on everybody’s lips ahead of the 2015 Cox Plate, but it is fair to say that Arod has just as much talent and he is currently priced at $8.50.
Arod is another horse that has gone to another level in the last 12 months and after he finished a more than credible third in the Group 1 Lockinge Stakes (1600m) at Newbury on May 16, he took out both the Group 3 Diomed Stakes (1713m) at Epsom on June 5 and the Group 2 Summer Mile Stakes (1609m) at Royal Ascot on July 11 before he finished a close second behind Solow in the Group 1 Sussex Stakes (1609m) at Goodwood on July 29.
The only other horse that is available at single figure Cox Plate odds is Kermadec, who is out to $9 after being priced at $7.50 earlier in the week.
Kermadec started his 2015 Spring Racing Carnival campaign with a fifth place finish in the Group 2 Warwick Stakes (1400m) at Royal Randwick on August 22 and he did not have a great deal of luck in running when he finished second in the Group 2 Chelmsford Stakes (1600m) at the same venue on September 5 before he returned to winning form in the Group 1 George Main Stakes (1600m) at Royal Randwick on September 19.
The Teofilo entire started the Ladbrokes Caulfield Stakes as a clear favourite, but he was left too great a task in the final stages of the race and he could finish no better than fourth behind Criterion, Happy Trails and Mongolian Khan.
There has been a sprinkling of support in 2015 Cox Plate betting markets for Gailo Chop ($26 into $21), while Fawkner ($17 out to $19), Hartnell ($15 out to $17), Mourinho ($26 out to $41), The Cleaner ($19 out to $21), Complacent ($17 out to $21) and Preferment ($13 out to $14) have all been on the drift.
The 2015 Cox Plate will be run at Caulfield at 5.40 (AEDT) this afternoon and you will be able to find all the Cox Plate results at horseracing.com.au.
