Mongolian Khan is on top of the 2015 Caulfield Cup tips of ratings expert Daniel O’Sullivan and he believes that the Australian Derby winner is deserving favourite in betting markets for the first major race of the 2015 Spring Racing Carnival.

Mongolian Khan had a stellar season as a three-year-old and he took out the Group 2 Waikato Guineas (2000m) and Group 2 Avondale Guineas (2100m) before he completed the New Zealand/Australian Derby, but he has clearly gone to another level as a four-year-old.

The Holy Roman Emperor entire started his spring preparation with a credible seventh in the Group 1 Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m) at Flemington on September 12 and he produced an improved performance when fourth in the Group 1 Underwood Stakes (1800m) at Caulfield on September 26 before he was arguably unlucky not to win the Group 1 Caulfield Stakes (2000m) last weekend.

Mongolian Khan was backed straight into 2015 Caulfield Cup odds of $4.80 following his impressive Caulfield Stakes performance, but O’Sullivan told RSN that there is still a great deal of value at that price and he is more than happy to throw his support behind the four-year-old in the Group 1 event.

“I have Mongolian Khan at around that $3.90 mark,” O’Sullivan said.

“It seems short in a big race like this, but he has had a flawless preparation and he just presents with an absolutely ideal profile.

“He has been spiralling up in his ratings and last weekend in the Caulfield Stakes he ran to a level that is going to be good enough to win this race.

“He was quiet unlucky in the Caulfield Stakes, he was held up by a tiring Pornichet, and Criterion really got the jump on him coming from two lengths behind at the 800.

“By the time Mongolian Khan was clear he was more than a length off Criterion and he ran him to .6.

“Then there is the fact that his peak rating as a three-year-old came in the ATC Derby and there is a very good prospect that coming into this race -which was his target all along, on a seven day back-up with the prospect of getting a good run midfield off a super strong performance last start – that he could go to a new level.

“That clearly makes him the horse to beat in this race.”

Mongolian Kham remains a dominate favourite in the 2015 Caulfield Cup betting market with Ladbrokes from Snow Sky ($9.50), Hauraki ($9.50), Fame Game ($10), Rising Romance ($10), Set Square ($10) and Complacent ($13).
