Newitt’s gem on Roses at Moonee Valley

Punters that supported the heavily backed Roses In The Glen at Moonee Valley will collect thanks to a great ride by Craig Newitt.

The daughter of Hussonet was parked in the box seat behind leaders Taylor’s Command and Lookater.

The well fancied High Class Lady wasn’t so lucky.

Jake Noonan was caught three wide on that filly and in two minds what to do.

He eventually searched for the lead when the leaders momentarily relaxed.

But when High Class Lady attacked, the pace went back on and she was beaten before the turn.

All the time Newitt had Roses In The Glen three lengths back.

However, at the turn she was on a loose rein .

Newitt had a choice of going wide or taking a run along the fence.

He chose the latter  but had to wait until Always Dreamin’, to his inside, dropped off.

The leader Taylor’s Command, despite the quickly run race, had more to give.

Newitt’s judgment about whether Alway’s Dreamin’ would in fact weaken proved correct.

He went back to the inside, saved three lengths and finished too well.

Stacey Lee settled back early, circled the field and looked a serious threat the the turn but couldn’t finish off.

“They had gone really quick and down the side of the track she wasn’t traveling that strong,” Newitt said about the winner.

“I had a choice to come out or cut the corner and I pulled the right rein.”

Roses In the Glen, backed from  $3 into $2.60, was having her first run in 22 weeks.

“She had been going really well at home with a few trials, she will benefit further from the run,” Newitt said.

“She is tough and has never let us down on the track yet.”

Trainer Mick Price’s representative Mick Nolen said Roses In The Glen was capable of winning a Saturday city race.
