Nearly 200 In Doncaster Mile Nominations

The Australian Turf Club were confident of good numbers for the 2012 Doncaster Mile Nominations and that’s exactly what they’ve got.

All up 197 horses were paid up for with some of the country’s best talent part of the mix.

In fact 31 of the horses on the list can lay claim to having a Group 1 win already under their belt.

Seventeen of them earned that Group 1 over a mile and seven of them got it on the Randwick circuit.

Among the more notable nominations are the previous two Doncaster champions in Sacred Choice and Rangirangdoo, as well as Cox Plate victor Pinker Pinker.

“The entries include winners and place-getters from all of the feature 1600m races run throughout Australia in the past year,” Colin Tuck., ATC general manager of racing, said.

As always the three year olds are expected to feature heavily as well given they can sneak in with a light weight at close to full maturity.

On that list the undoubted top fancy is Atlantic Jewel, providing of course Mark Kavanagh can get her back to top health following an injury in the spring.

Other three year olds on track to the Doncaster include Manawanui, Mosheen, Streama and Doctor Doom.

Gai Waterhouse is also hoping to turn around the fortunes of More Joyous which flopped in last year’s race as a big favourite.

Monton is the only horse with an exemption from the ballot at this stage thanks to his win in the Villiers Stakes.

The other exemption races will be the Chipping Norton Stakes (March 10), Liverpool City Cup (March 10), Randwick Guineas (March 17), Coolmore Classic (March 24), George Ryder Stakes (April 7) and Doncaster Prelude (April 14).
