There was plenty of money for Murt The Flirt throughout the week and punters that took the juicy odds on offer for the Murtajill gelding were handsomely rewarded when he showed an impressive turn-of-foot to run away from the rest of the field when asked for an extra effort from jockey Chris Symons in the final stages of the race.

Symons said after the race that Murt The Flirt has proven a difficult horse to handle ahead of his racing debut and he admitted that he was worried that three-year-old would refuse to enter the barriers, but was thrilled to record a race win on the promising gelding.

“He is a bit crazy, but I love him,” Symons said.

“Mentally he is definitely not there and I am surprised that he made it to the barriers to be honest with you.

“He had a lovely run, that wind is really hectic down the side and I suppose that we got a bit of cover that helped us and when I got him that run at the top of the straight he took off.”

Trainer Brendan Mccarthy said that he was always confident that Murt The Flirt had the talent to be competitive in the Magic Millions Three-Year-Old Classic and he was delighted that his plan to set the gelding for the $100,000 race had paid off.

Mccarthy confirmed that a trip to Queensland for the $1 million Magic Millions Guineas was on the agenda for Murt The Flirt and he is confident that the enigmatic gelding is good enough to be a player in the lucrative race.

“It takes quite a bit and you need a lot of luck to get here, but I am very happy with the way that things have gone,” Mccarthy said.

“The owners and the horse have been excellent to work with and it makes the job a lot easier.

“I know the favourite probably proved himself at Listed level and was a decent horse, but I thought we really had close to a Group horse coming into this and it was good that it came off.

“Hopefully we are on our way up there, so that will be great.”

Reigning Meteor was well-backed in the lead-up to the Magic Millions Three-Year-Old Classic, but missed the start and was could finish no better than fourth.
