Darci Be Good's next test will be in the Spring Stakes at Newcastle

There’s a bit of buzz around Bede Murray’s top colt heading into the spring and the next test for him will come at Newcastle tomorrow afternoon in the Spring Stakes.

Darci Be Good has already recorded a win this season and last start he added to that with a tough third placed finish in the Ming Dynasty at Warwick Farm.

While the run was good Murray knows the horse will need to improve as the two that finished ahead of him, Ambidexter and Sangster, are both also in the Spring Stakes field.

Surprisingly though it’s neither of them that worries him most, it’s the unbeaten dual starter Just The Tonic he rates as the one to beat.

“It’s probably a pretty even matched field, the top weight is unbeaten and a horse that’s unbeaten you’ve got to respect them don’t you,” he said.

There is some real upside to Darci Be Good though including the fact it’ll be the first time he gets back out to 1600m since his Fernhill Handicap triumph.

“That’ll suit him, the big track at Newcastle will suit him,” he said.

“He’s a real mile and a half horse so I think the race and track will suit him real good.”

After using a different jockey in every start of his career Murray was looking for a bit of continuity going forward and as a result he’s booked the services of Glen boss.

“I preferred to have Glen because Glen was available for tomorrow and the Spring Champion Stakes in a couple of weeks time,” he said.

There will only be the eight runners in the race tomorrow but that’s another area of little concern for Murray.

“There was probably eight or 10 runners in the Fernhill Handicap (actual field of 11) which he won, he can settle or he can drop off,” he said.

“I’d probably expect him to settle around fourth.”

One thing for sure is that he’s ready to fire right away with only a short campaign for the three year old this time in.

“After the Champion Stakes he’ll be spelling and I think he’ll come back a really strong horse for all the autumn races,” he said.
