Caulfield trainer Ciaron Maher’s plan to peak his stable star Mr O’Ceirin for Saturday’s  Group 1 $500,000 Titan Energy Services Doomben Cup (2000m) at Doomben  is coming to hand perfectly.

Mr O’Ceirin will be having his third run this campaign when he lines up in the weight for age Winter Carnival feature this week and Maher couldn’t be happier with the six year old’s condition.

“That was what we planned with him, to go into these races and really target them,” Maher told AAP.

“The horse has come up super. He has thrived up there. Glen Boss is going to ride him and he knows him well.

“He’s got a lot of favours.”

“He should hopefully peak for this. I think he’ll take good improvement out of his last run.”

Mr O’Ceirin had one run in Victoria when eleventh over an unsuitable 1400m in the Group 3 $150,000 Race-Tech Victoria Handicap at Caulfield on April 19 before travelling to the Gold Coast to finish an encouraging second to three time Group 1 winner Streama in the Group 2 $358,000 Wimmers Soft Drinks A. D. Hollindale Stakes (1800m)  on May 3.

Top Melbourne jockey Glen Boss has developed a good association with Mr O’Ceirin with the pair combining for three wins as well as the second at the Gold Coast and hopefully another win in the Doomben Cup.

Maher did have to sort out a minor hiccup last week when he and fellow trainer Darren Weir failed to pay up the first acceptance fee on time for Mr O’Ceirin and Akzar, but after some negotiations with the Brisbane Racing Club, both gallopers were allowed back into the field after paying half the $23,100 late entry fee.

Mr O’Ceirin is currently a $7 chance for the Doomben Cup with Ladbrokes.com.au who have the Team Hawkes trained Leebaz sharing favourite with Streama at $3.80.

Akzar from the Darren Weir stable is next in the betting at $4.70 ahead of Chris Waller’s Junoob at $5.50.
