Melbourne-bound gelding Mr Moet will be given the chance to break a weight-carrying record in Tuesday’s Group 2 Perth Cup (2400m) before being tested against some of the best gallopers in the country during the autumn.

The five-year-old has been allocated the topweight of 59kg meaning he will have to produce a history-breaking performance to taste success in the $500,000 staying feature.

Since the introduction of the metric system to racing in 1972, the biggest weight carried to victory in the Perth Cup was 55kg by Saratov in 1989.

The Adam Durrant-trained galloper has been the standout performer of the Perth Summer Carnival this year, winning the Group 1 Railway Stakes and Group 2 CB Cox Stakes as well as finishing second to Luckygray in the Group 1 Kingston Town Classic.

Durrant told the West Australian the son of Mosayter has pulled up well from Saturday’s dashing CB Cox Stakes win and is likely to find his way to the start line on Tuesday.

“At this stage he has pulled up fantastic and we will just keep monitoring him,” Durrant said.

Durrant is set to have two of the top Perth Cup runners, with CB Cox Stakes runner-up Chester Road the early $4 fancy ahead of his stablemate Mr Moet ($6).

Five-year-old Chester Road was run down and beaten by nearly a length on Saturday but will meet his stablemate five kilograms better at the weights in the Perth Cup.

Durrant has not been secretive about his plans to test Mr Moet against the east-coast horses in the autumn, with the Group 2 St George Stakes (1800m) at Caulfield on February 23 a likely lead-up to the primary goal of the Group 1 Australian Cup (2000m) at Flemington on March 9.

“The Perth Cup will be a good measuring stick to where we are going in Melbourne for him,” he said.
