The owners of Americain were left seething after an abysmal ride from French jockey Gerald Mosse in The BMW at Rosehill last Saturday.

Mosse was flown in specifically to ride Americain in the $2.25 million The BMW due to his long and successful partnership with the horse, which includes a win in the 2010 Melbourne Cup.

The jockey sat three wide on Americain throughout the entire running of the 2,400 metre race and appeared to be unsure of where to place the seven-year-old as he loomed in the final straight.

Americain was unable to recover from the run and finished one and a half lengths behind Manighar in second.

Part-owner Kevin Bamford has since confirmed that Mosse will not be asked back to ride Americain, who is now trained at Victoria’s Euroa by David Hayes.

“I think it’s a given that Gerald will not be coming back,” Bamford said.

“He will never ride the horse again.

“It was a dismal effort.”

Bamford believes that The BMW result would have been very different had his horse been given every chance in the running.

“The horse was magnificent,” he said.

“Stephanie (Nigge) and David (Hayes) had done a wonderful job.

“He couldn’t have been any better. And you get some cowboy who in a minute and a half destroys all that hard work.

“If you knew anything about Rosehill you know you can’t sit three wide for a mile and a half.”

Americain has now placed in both his starts this autumn and may have one final chance to salute in the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Royal Randwick on May 28.

The 2,000 metre Queen Elizabeth Stakes would be a drop in distance for the Dynaformer gelding, who is yet to win over anything less than 2,400 metres in Australia.

A final decision on the run is expected within the coming few days.
